Start out with like two or three markers and do some monochrome colored pieces. Then "treat" yourself to a new marker like one or twice a week. That's how I built up my collection.

I feel ya, homie. My coloring with markers started out with ONE prisma color brush marker that a customer of mine gave me as a gift. She was in town for an art con and worked for prisma color markers.
